Severe Open Ankle Sprain
نویسندگان
چکیده
A healthy 19-year-old male presented with complaints of right ankle pain. Twelve hours before, he had jumped off a skateboard, inverting and abrading his right ankle. He noted continued bleeding from the injury and difficulty bearing weight. He had a 1-cm puncture-type wound anterolateral to his lateral malleolus with oozing blood. There was a large hematoma and diffuse tenderness to palpation over the entire lateral malleolus. Sensation, pulses, and strength were intact and there was no joint laxity. Ankle radiographs showed pneumarthrosis and air in the soft tissues of the leg (Figure, parts a and b). There were no fractures, and ankle alignment was preserved. Stress views showed no widening of the mortise. The orthopedic surgery team was consulted.

Acute ankle sprain: conservative or surgical approach?
Ankle sprains fall into two main categories: acute ankle sprains and chronic ankle instability, which are among the most common recurrent injuries during occupational activities, athletic events, training and army service.Acute ankle sprain is usually managed conservatively and functional rehabilitation failure by conservative treatment leads to development of chronic ankle instability, which m...
متن کاملLocal sensation changes and altered hip muscle function following severe ankle sprain.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Changes in sensory information have been shown to influence muscle function locally. Some clinicians, however, believe that the influence may be more extensive. To investigate this clinical concept, subjects with severe ankle sprain were assessed for local sensation changes and proximal hip/back muscle function. SUBJECTS Of a total of 361 potential subjects whose medica...
متن کاملSome benefit from physiotherapy intervention in the subgroup of patients with severe ankle sprain as determined by the ankle function score: a randomised trial.
QUESTIONS Do patients with a severe ankle injury (baseline ankle function score < or = 40) do worse in the short-term than patients with a mild injury (score > 40)? Does physiotherapy intervention have more effect on patients with a severe injury compared with a mild injury in the short- or long-term? Is self-reported recovery related to ankle function score over time? DESIGN Subgroup analysi...

متن کاملEfficacy and safety of celecoxib in the treatment of acute pain due to ankle sprain in a Latin American and Middle Eastern population.
Ankle sprains are common acute soft-tissue injuries. This 7-day open-label, multicentre, randomized study compared the efficacy and safety of celecoxib with non-selective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in treating acute ankle sprain with moderate-to-severe ankle pain in 278 patients. Patients received either celecoxib (400 mg loading dose followed by 200 mg twice daily) or stand...
متن کاملComparison of Spatiotemporal Parameters and Vertical Ground Reaction Force in the Stance Phase of Gait Among Ankle Sprain Coper and Healthy Athletes
Purpose: It is essential to maintain dynamic stability during walking to perform daily tasks independently. The present study aimed at comparing the spatiotemporal parameters and the values of the vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) as well as determining the time to reach them in ankle-sprain coper and healthy athletes during the stance phase of gait. Methods: A total of 28 female universit...
